It’s been seven years since the passing of my dearest sister, Sherria, of Illinois, as I recall a conversation we had. She was like a mother to me. At one point in my life, as a homeless teenager, she and her husband let me live in their home.
After a pleasant greeting, she began to tell me about her challenges as a single widow with a heart condition, which we shared. She lived on a large property, caring for her several dogs and a horse. She struggled to live within her means, like many of us today, due to the escalating increases in so many things.
Her major issue was that she had run over a large object while cutting her tall grass, which damaged her mower. She was very concerned about replacing it, wondering how she could finance it with several other repairs and chores that she did not have the funds for. She asked me whether it was okay to take the money that she gives to her church and use it for those needs. I told her that it was between her and God. Gloria and I had been sending her funds once a month to assist. Sometimes we can get in the way of what God wants to do for us by taking control with our limited ideas.
After we shared the current events in our lives, I said, “Let me pray for you.” She welcomed the prayers, and afterwards we both returned to our separate activities. I returned to my cozy “La-Z-Boy Chair” where I was engaged in resting my bones. Well, just before nodding off, the phone rang, and Gloria answered and passed it to me. My dear sister called again and asked, “What are you doing?” I replied, “I was almost ready to visit Mr. Sandman.” She said, “Wake up… you can sleep after I tell you what has happened! ” She had received a call from the Catholic Society in her area with an offer to help, but she tried to turn them down. The Nun remained persistent in her offer and told her that she had 12 young people available for three days to do… whatever she needed done, at no cost to her.
She then accepted and rejoiced, thanking God for such a quick answer to her prayers. God will answer our prayers, but sometimes we must remove the sin of pride and excuses first for Him to bless us.
When we keep God first in our lives, things line up according to His will, which allows us to rejoice. Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
As we celebrate our country’s Independence Day, continue to depend upon God!
