Some time ago, my wife broke an incense holder and asked me, “Can you repair this with glue?” I told her that I had plenty of glue, but that doesn’t guarantee that I can repair it. In life, there are things beyond repair, especially if they are shattered into a thousand pieces.
I like the definition of the word Restoration in Webster’s Dictionary. It is a return of something to a former, original, normal, or unimpaired condition. There may be lots of things that you can think of, such as a house, a car, or a piece of furniture.
I’ve seen houses that appear to be irreparable and should be considered for demolition. There were broken windows, doors off the hinges, electrical wiring stripped from the walls, holes in the roof and floors, while the structure remained intact. On back roads, I have also observed old rusty abandoned cars that were very elegant in their day. Nor is it unusual to see discarded furniture on the curb with a sign that says, “FREE.”
A person with creative vision and resources can restore the features to their original state or even improve them. A house can be restored with new windows, doors, and wiring, new paint, a new roof, and all the trimmings. The old, rusted, and deserted car can be restored with a new paint job that looks nearly priceless. Needless to say, abandoned furniture has been sanded, re-glued, and refinished to resemble new factory-finished furniture.
When it comes to broken relationships, they are much harder to repair than houses, cars, and furniture because there are so many human factors to consider, such as honesty, reliability, trust, love, forgiveness, and a person’s emotional state. Relationships can also be further complicated because they involve imperfect people who were created for relationships with God.
All human beings were created in God’s image and likeness for an open, honest, and healthy relationship with Him. Adam and Eve’s relationship lasted until they decided to disobey God, which resulted in feelings of guilt, shame, and abandonment.
The month of December is a reminder of how much God the Father desires to restore our broken relationships with Him and others by sending His Son. If you are open to being restored, let this month be a turning point in your life.
Jeremiah 29:13 ESV “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”
