Pastor Bill Hayden
I’m sure you have heard the expression “Well, write it down.” As a young person you didn’t feel the need to write stuff down because you were a fast learner with excellent recall ability. Some people have the wonderful gift of a photographic memory and all they need to do is see it once to recall it. In younger days, we were strong and resilient in extending our activities… like dancing and staying out late. We knew that tomorrow was coming and we would recuperate from overextending ourselves from the previous night’s activities.
In our young vibrant life, there were many challenges and very few dull moments. As teenagers and young adults, some of us did questionable things such as smoking, drinking, experimenting with drugs and even wearing eyeglasses which we didn’t need. It was trendy and cool, so we thought. Well, some of the things that we thought were so cool and trendy then have now become our reality. Now, our doctors have us on prescription medication, wearing glasses and who knows… maybe a candidate for hearing aids or walking canes? The body doesn’t bounce back as when we were young and robust.
As a young adult, I prided myself on having a great memory. My wife would give me a list of 7 items from the grocer to pick up… No problem! She would end the conversation by saying, “Write it down!” Now, being the man back then, “I would say that I don’t need to write it down; I can remember those items.” Well now, if it isn’t written down within 10 minutes of shopping, I would think… “What else was I supposed to bring home?” So, while standing in the “Humble Pie Aisle” …. the dreaded call is placed, “Honey, I forgot the last two items?” What’s even worse, is writing it down and then trying to remember where you left the list.
Is it because I need new prescriptions for my glasses that I couldn’t see where the list was or is it the meds that I’m taking? On the other hand, is Father Time knocking at our door and we are all Living the Days of Our Lives… with eternity in view?
Ecclesiastics 12:1 ESV Remember [thoughtfully] also your Creator in the days of your youth [for you are not your own, but His], before the evil days come or the years draw near when you will say [of physical pleasures], “I have no enjoyment and delight in them.”
