Some things we can afford to neglect, while others can have a profoundly adverse effect on our lives, such as a lack of good health. Good health is more than proper diet, exercise, rest, and relaxation. Many of us may diligently adhere to eating well, getting our daily routine, rest, and relaxation.
Nonetheless, we are more than physical beings, and to be well-balanced, we must not neglect our mental and spiritual health. Our mind and spirit must nourish themselves in wholesome things to maintain a healthy perspective on life.
There is so much negativity in our world today that it has caused people to focus on the negative, which has a detrimental impact on their mental and spiritual well-being. It is no longer unusual for individuals to act out in mid-air on a flight, disrupting the safety of both the plane and its passengers. As I have stated before, this kind of behavior would have been unheard of a few years ago. It is as if people have lost their ability to be rational and empathetic towards one another.
I have read and heard people remark about a deceased person who lived a long life, the life of the party, and all that they accomplished. Whenever there was an event, the party didn’t start until the individual arrived. What was sad about that for me…people were impressed and depended upon his ability to get in the mood for merriment. He loved to party, neglecting the more important aspects of life without any view of eternity!
There is nothing wrong with enjoying the company of others, but if that is the focus of your life…eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we may die. It doesn’t mean that you have lived well simply because you managed to reach a certain age before your earthly journey comes to an end.
A well-lived life is balanced in soul, body, and spirit, with eternity in view, for we are triune beings created for eternity. Many focus on the here and now but seldom consider their eternal destiny. Our earthly bodies break down and return to the dust of the earth, but the spirit lives on forever.
While we can have rational thought, it would be in our best interest to consider the legacy we leave with others and where we want to spend eternity.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”
